ENGLAND’S LARGEST

The hotel is located above Keedholme Gorge and the River Tees and opposite the short woodland walk to the mighty High Force Waterfall, long-famous as England’s largest and most dramatic waterfall. At different seasons throughout the year, this mighty waterfall presents a different appearance and character. Whether Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter, you will be amazed at its individual beauty and sometimes breath-taking power that fills visitors with awe.

The waterfall is sometimes best-visited after periods of heavy rain when the water flow rises suddenly. Mick and Vicki have had numerous opportunities to visit the waterfall in its uncontrolled violence and energy since they quite literally live right on the doorstep. Visitors have the advantage that after a visit to the waterfall they can call in to the adjacent hotel for food and refreshment and to look at the old photographs of the hotel and waterfall.

This 21-metre natural attraction has a huge central column comprised of Whin Sill, a very hard igneous rock. In times of extreme rainfall the landform is quite simply one huge waterfall, in normal weather conditions the waterfall tumbles down the southern side of the central column,,, and in in-between times the River Tees flows down both sides of the central column. On rare occasions through history the waterfall has frozen solid… and the hotel possesses some lovely historic photographs of these extreme weather events!
