If you are a keen walker or rambler then you will find that Upper Teesdale has numerous walks from very short to more extensive and the High Force Hotel is a natural base. The Pennine Way long distance footpath passes nearby.

Teesdale and the Durham Dales is in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a famous AONB. But it is also famous as the High Pennines as this is the highest part of England’s Pennine backbone rising to 2970 feet amsl.

The emblem of Teesdale is the rare Blue Gentian, or Spring Gentian, a beautiful small blue flowering plant that is a relic of the last Ice Age. Today it is protected with other rare plants in the Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve.

In addition this is an important farming and lead mining area with remains of lead mining to be seen around the area as well as lime kilns such as the famous Parkers’ Kilns up Beck Road from Middleton-in -Teesdale.

Other attractions include Eggleston Gardens and Bowlees Visitor Centre. But Nature’s riches abound with  many rare plants being found in the area, many protected in the Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve and the North Penninea Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This is fantastic walking country, the Pennine Way passing our door… and the river provides opportunities for fishing and white water canoeists.

And on the southern border is the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The reception area is comfortable seating areas with sofas and coffee tables, just the place to rest after an exciting walk in the surrounding area. We also have a large function room, ideal for that family get together or that celebration.

We have recently been given a 3 Stars Inn Award from Enjoy England along with an award for our breakfasts.
The hotel has a new fully integrated fire alarm system with electronic smoke detectors in all the bedrooms and public areas.
